A useful clue to early street names can sometimes be found in the names of the lanes that ran off the main roadways as service access ways for tradesmen and refuse collectors. The roads acquired new names, but the laneways’ names remained unchanged. Some examples are Nathan Lane in Coogee, Orange Lane in North Randwick, Cory Lane in Bondi Junction and Point Piper Lane in Paddington.
