SANDS 1858-1865 – A Searchable Database of the Eastern Suburbs

This searchable database includes all the Sands’ Sydney Directories listings for the Eastern suburbs from the first edition of 1858/59 to that published in January 1865 – there were no Directories published in 1860 or 1862 for the years 1859 and 1861.

The purpose of this database is to enable searches for items other than the names of people over this eight year period from 1857 to 1864. House names, all the occupants of a street, Hotel owners over time, or the prevalence of certain tradesmen in a given suburb can all now be easily found to assist the local historian, or perhaps initiate new research topics.

Use the search box just above and to the right of the column headings, type in a Keyword, and press the Enter key. All the results will be displayed on screen – you can adjust the number viewable up to 100 per page, and also re-arrange the columns by clicking on the arrows. The ‘Organisation’ column contains generic names such as Hotel, Church, Victoria barracks, School, etc., to enable bulk searches for these topics.

The listings of the Edition published in January 1866, recording events in 1865, will be added shortly. From the January 1867 edition onwards, the Eastern Suburbs category was replaced by individual listings for the developing suburbs. Because these are much smaller sections, they are easier to search.

Unfortunately it is not possible to ‘Freeze’ the column headings in a website of this nature, but hopefully the contents and layout of the database are self-explanatory.
